West Ham open Jelavic talks as Celik joins Rangers

RANGERS have held informal talks with West Ham United over top goalscorer Nikica Jelavic.

Ally McCoist confirmed that no formal offer has been received for the Croatian striker, who has netted 17 goals for the Scottish champions this season. However, it is believed that discussions between the clubs have taken place over a potential switch to Upton Park. McCoist said: “They [West Ham] have not made an official bid.

“The reported amount would not be enough to meet the demands of the owner.

“That’s where we are. Six million is not nearly enough.”

Meanwhile, Swedish midfielder Mervan Celik joined Rangers on a three-and-a-half-year deal yesterday.

The 21-year-old was a free agent after leaving GAIS and becomes McCoist’s first signing of the January transfer window. But he has not yet gained international clearance, meaning he will not be available for today’s SPL game at home to Aberdeen.

McCoist said: “He’s very direct and very, very competitive. He can get by people, he can score goals. He’s an all-action player that hopefully the fans will take to.”
