Third Division: Berwick face nervous trip to Ibrox

BERWICK Rangers went down 2-0 to Annan at Shielfield on Saturday and now face a nervous 90 minutes at Ibrox in their final league match as they look to secure the last remaining promotion play-off place.

Ian Little’s side sit three points clear of Elgin, who will face bottomclub East Stirling, and have an eight-goal advantage in terms of goal difference. However, fingernails could well be bitten short on the Third Division’s final day.

Annan’s Scott Chaplain drilled home a Steven Sloan cut-back just before half-time and after the home side’s Lee Currie was sent off four minutes from time Martin McNiff added a long-range strike after home goalkeeper Marc McCallum had ventured forward for a corner.

Little said afterwards: “I was hoping that things would have been done and dusted. However, we will just have to go to Rangers and look to get the result we need.”

Elgin stayed in the hunt with a 1-1 draw at Stirling Albion where Craig Gunn opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half and Stephen Day replied in the second. Moray boss Ross Jack said: “We will need to go out and attack next Saturday.”

Peterhead remain second after a 3-0 win over Clyde that was success number seven in a row. Andy Rodgers scored either side of half-time and Rory McAllister netted a penalty after Clyde debutant Steve Bronsky was red carded for bringing the striker down in the box.

Queen’s Park ended Montrose hopes of a play-off place with a 2-1 win at Links Park to sit level on points with Peterhead and the runners-up spot will be decided when the two sides meet at Hampden next week.

Tony Quinn headed the Spiders’ opener and Scott Gibson scrambled the winner 14 minutes from time after Martin Boyle’s leveller.
