The Ibrox full-back will be 29 this year but has yet to experience the delight of playing in, far less winning, a cup final.

And while the competition has been met with some scorn, mostly by those who are not favourably disposed towards the Light Blues, the former Aberdeen defender, who started his career at Pittodrie, said: “I haven’t played in any finals. I played in the Youth Cup final and we lost 3-1 to Celtic and that is the last cup final I played in.

“As a player you want to win things, you want to win cups and this is my first experience of a final so hopefully I get to play and hopefully we will win.

“You can only win the competitions you are in.

“It is a massive game for us, these are the games you want to play in as a footballer.

“You want to win things so we are really looking forward to it. We have played three or four games already and the whole point is to win it and we have a chance to do that.

“It will be an amazing feeling for us if we do win it.”

The Ibrox club took another step towards their return to the top flight following their descent into administration by winning League One this season and following the Ramsdens final they take on Dundee United in the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final at Ibrox.

However, Foster has been in the game long enough to know that given the resources still at Ally McCoist’s disposal and their historical standing in the game, they will get few plaudits if they beat Rovers but plenty of criticism if they lose.

The former Bristol City defender said: “It is not one of the major tournaments so everyone will say ‘you should have won it anyway’ and if we don’t win people will say ‘you are not good enough to win it’.

“That’s what comes with playing at a club of this stature.

“The fans expect certain things, we as players expects certain things, and that is something we need to deal with.

“So we won’t get any plaudits if we do win but it is one we will be doing our utmost to win.

“Performances have dipped a bit since we won the league and we are looking to put that right on Sunday with a good performance and victory and it keeps the momentum going for the following week against Dundee United.

“But this is a big game on Sunday.”
