Rating Mark Warburton’s 11 signings at Rangers

RANGERS yesterday agreed a deal to bring in Frank McParland, former chief scout at Liverpool, as head of player recruitment.

The Ibrox side certainly needed someone to help establish some sort of scouting system, but even though it was an ardous task for manager Mark Warburton and David Weir, on top of their coaching duties, they have done a tremendous job at recruiting talent thus far.

Alan Pattullo looks at every player signed this term and scores them out of ten. (Spoiler, most of them do quite well.)

Martyn Waghorn

14 league goals in 13 games – can’t say fairer than that. Add in another three goals in the cups and it’s clear Rangers have found a budding, if still slightly raw, talent. Grabbed a double on his debut v Hibs and has scored consistently ever since. 9/10

Jason Holt

Surprise signing from Hearts in that it was a surprise the Tynecastle club let him go. Has fared exceptionally well in midfield, contributing four goals. A regular and fast becoming a crowd favourite. 8/10

Danny Wilson

Perhaps the one signing that hasn’t come off, yet.

Strange, because Wilson’s arrival was greeted with perhaps most glee by Rangers fans who treated the capture of Hearts’ title winning skipper as something of a coup.

Replaced early v Hibs two weekends ago after coming back into the team and unused substitute on Saturday v Alloa. 5/10

Rob Kiernan

Solid enough start from the former Wigan player who has ended up being Rangers’ most consistent central defender to date. Mark Warburton has stuck with him while clearly harbouring doubts about partner Wilson’s form. 6/10

Wes Foderingham

A few heart in mouth moments early in the season meant it took a while for Rangers fans to be convinced of his worth. But while happy to take risks with the ball at his feet is also proving a decent shot stopper. Not yet totally convincing at crosses, as illustrated recently v Hibs. 7/10

Andy Halliday

Few expected Halliday to hit the ground running quite so well as he has done so after sealing his dream move to his boyhood club. Former Livingston player was out of contract after spell at Bradford. Not every Rangers fan was inspired by his arrival but has exceeded expectations by becoming a regular in midfield, scoring three goals to date. 7/10

James Tavernier

Waghorn has been earning he goal-scoring headlines but Tavenier has not been far behind. 10 goals in 19 appearances. Not bad for a full-back. Has been another undoubted success since arriving from Wigan with his energy on the right. Can defend a bit too, when required. 10/10

Jordan Thompson

The 18-year-old was signed for the future and has had limited first-team opportunties thus far. n/a

ON LOAN

Nathan Oduwa

Rocked by ‘fancy dan’ accusations on his arrival after a trick too many against Alloa on is debut. Started most recent league game against the same opponents but used mostly from bench. A good option to have. 6/10

Dominic Ball

Given Wilson’s injury problems and loss of form has formed a stable partnership recently with Kiernan in middle of defence. Astute from Warburton, who saw need to bring in cover for this area early in the season. 6/10

Gedion Zelalem

Short term loan signing from Arsenal quickly became a regular starter but dropped to bench for recent Hibs game. Back in the side on Saturday v Alloa, has looked more than promising in midfield. Another good addition – with Rangers hoping to extend loan. 7/10
