Rangers v Airdrie: Nicky Law eyes cup run

NICKY Law would love to see Rangers handed the chance to pit their wits against top-flight opposition in the William Hill Scottish Cup - if they can progress past Airdrie tonight.

Rangers host the Diamonds at Ibrox in the third round this evening (kick-off 7.45pm), aiming for a repeat of their 6-0 win the last time the sides met in league competition.

A win could also tee up a clash with Scottish Premiership opposition in the next round, a challenge Law says Rangers would relish.

The midfielder said: “We certainly won’t disrespect Airdrie. We played really well in the game there earlier in the season and ended up winning 6-0. We know how tough it will be. But, if we can get through this game, then the Premiership sides come in and that’s something we would be really looking forward to.

“We would relish that challenge of pitting our wits against those sides.

“We want to show teams that we feel we are strong and that we can play against those sides.”

Rangers are aiming for a second cup success in four days after booking their place in the final of the Ramsdens Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Stenhousemuir.

Law added: “We were really pleased to reach the final of the Ramsdens Cup the other night.

“It was a tough game, as expected, at Stenhousemuir. They played well but we came through it with another clean sheet as well, which is pleasing.

“We look to the Scottish Cup now and another tough game against Airdrie but we are all looking forward to it.”

The Scottish Professional Football League this week announced Easter Road as the venue for the Ramsdens Cup final against Raith Rovers.

Manager Ally McCoist has already stated he would have preferred a larger venue but Law had no complaints about the choice.

He said: “I quite enjoy playing at Easter Road. I’ve got a good record there and I’ve never lost there in my two years at Motherwell.

“It’s a ground that holds good memories for me. I don’t think it really matters where the final takes place. We were just pleased to get there.”

Meanwhile, Jim McColl has confirmed former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow is set to take on a chief executive role at Rangers in the event of a boardroom shake-up.

Scottish businessman McColl is leading a group of disgruntled shareholders looking to change the current Ibrox board, which now comprises only Brian Stockbridge and James Easdale following the recent departure of chief executive Craig Mather and fellow director Bryan Smart.

Former Gers chairman Malcolm Murray and former director Paul Murray - as well as allies Alex Wilson and Scott Murdoch - are backed by McColl and hope to win directorships when the club finally holds its annual general meeting at some point before December 31.

Rangers, who announced £14.4million losses for the 13-month period to the end of June, widened their search for a new chief executive by advertising the post in the Financial Times, but McColl revealed he already has a suitable candidate in-waiting.

‘’We have spoken to Christian about the role of coming in and helping sort out on the CEO side,’’ he told Sky Sports News.

‘’I think Christian is open to that and quite keen, but he first wants to see stability on the board. He needs to see the board sorted out then he would be prepared to join.”
