Rangers eye shock move for Mark Wotte

RANGERS are reportedly sizing up Mark Wotte for a director of football position at Ibrox.

The Scottish Sun reportsthat the Dutchman, who stepped down from his role as the Scottish FA’s performance director, is high on a list of candidates to fulfil the position at Rangers.

However, it is not known what effect an appointment of a director of football would have on manager Ally McCoist, who opposed the appointment of ex-Ibrox midfielder Christian Nerlinger in a similar role previously.

It is believed that Wotte is viewed as the perfect candidate to revamp the club’s academy structure and assist the first team with his extensive list of contacts in the game.

Wotte is understood to be after a job at club level in the UK since quitting his post with Scottish football’s governing body.

A former player who saw his career cut short by injury at the age of just 26, the 53-year-old can draw on a wealth of experience managing clubs, thanks to over 20 years in Dutch, Egyptian, English, Qatari and Romanian football, including a brief stint managing Southampton prior to their administration.

He was appointed to the new role of Performance Director of the Scottish FA in June 2011, departing in October 2014 after putting in place recommendations from a review conducted by former first minister Henry McLeish.
