Rangers: ‘Craig Whyte may be involved’ - Johnston

FORMER Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston has warned that ex-owner Craig Whyte may still be attempting to control the club.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Johnston said that the ongoing drama at Ibrox - which continued with the resignation of chief executive Craig Mather yesterday - has the hallmarks of Whyte’s influence.

Johnston said: “Mather came into Ibrox during the Charles Green era and Green was linked to Whyte. My concern is Whyte’s malevolent influence could be part of the eight-ninths of the iceberg hidden from view.

“I don’t believe Mather... suddenly decided to resign. Somebody is pulling the strings and there are other people out there with their own agendas.”

Mather resigned his post at the club yesterday after a Court of Session defeat over the club’s forthcoming annual general meeting. Fellow board member Bryan Smart also handed in his resignation yesterday.

Former director Paul Murray succeeded on Monday in having a motion to install four new directors added to the AGM agenda, after Mather and the club attempted to block the move.
