Novo agrees surprise Legia Warsaw switch

JUST a few weeks after training with his old club Rangers and hoping for a return to Ibrox, Nacho Novo last night completed a surprise move to Polish title-chasers Legia Warsaw after negotiating an early release from his contract with La Liga strugglers Sporting Gijon.

The 32-year-old has initially signed a deal until the end of the season, although there is an option for a further year if Novo impresses.

Legia currently sit in second spot in the Polish Ekstraklasa, just four points behind league leaders Slask Wroclaw – the side who dumped Dundee United out of European competition earlier this campaign.

The Ibrox hero’s new club are also still participating in the Europa League and face Sporting Lisbon in the last 32, however Novo’s registration has come too late for him to feature.

Novo was a prominent figure in Scottish football for almost ten years, initially impressing as a waspish forward for Raith Rovers and Dundee.

A move to Rangers followed in 2004, for whom he became a cult hero, winning six trophies in as many years and featuring in the Uefa Cup final of 2008.

The Spaniard was recently back at Murray Park as he trained with the current Rangers squad last month, during La Liga’s winter break.

However, due to the precarious nature of the Ibrox club’s finances there was no recourse to bring the front-man back to Glasgow permanently.
