No looking back for Gers insists Davis

The Scottish champions were held to a goalless draw by St Johnstone at Ibrox yesterday after the Hoops claimed victory at Inverness earlier in the day.

Celtic are now in action twice – in their game in hand against Dunfermline midweek and Saturday’s meeting with St Mirren – before Rangers travel to Kilmarnock on Sunday.

That means what was a 12-point lead at the summit could effectively be slashed to just four points before the trip to Ayrshire, but stand-in skipper Davis claims they are not worried. He said: “I think there is going to be plenty of to-ing and fro-ing between now and the end of the season.

“As players, we are not concentrating on that. We just want to keep the consistency going and keep winning games.

“We are not too concerned really about where Celtic are at this moment in time. There is so much football still to be played. We’re not even thinking about our lead, it’s just about keeping winning our own games.

“That’s what we’ve always tried to do since I’ve been at the club.”

What is of more concern to Rangers was a lacklustre performance against Saints, where the home side never looked like taking control of the match.

Davis said: “It just wasn’t good enough to be fair. We all realise that.

“We didn’t create anything. There were a number of factors and credit has to go to St Johnstone as well because they played a good game and they will be delighted with the result themselves.

“We can only look at ourselves and the fact that we didn’t produce the goods. I think there was a little bit of spark missing.”

Ally McCoist’s men were also held to a 1-1 draw at home by St Mirren following the previous international break.

Davis said: “I don’t know whether it’s a coincidence the fact that the last couple of draws at home have come after the international break or not.

“But it’s definitely not an excuse.”
