Michel Preud’homme holds talks for vacant Rangers job

Belgian legend Michel Preud’homme is interested in becoming the new Rangers manager and his representatives have already held talks with chairman Dave King.

According to the Sunday Mail Preud’homme’s agent Ugi Canturk met with King to discuss the position with Preud’homme keen to work with the club’s director of football Mark Allen.

The 58-year-old has an impressive CV winning trophies at Standard Liège, gent, Twente, Club Brugge, as well as Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab.

He played 58 times for his country and his 22-year playing career took in Standard Liège, Mechelen and Benfica where he finished his career and took a director position.

He has been offered a job at Mechelen where he is a fan favourite but is prepared to wait to hear from Rangers.

Canturk told Mailsport: “We’ve had a nice conversation with Rangers and everything is open. Michel has been offered a job at Mechelen but that is on hold. We have said that as long as there is no decision yet from Rangers, we don’t want to block ourselves.

“Michel is honoured that Rangers would consider him. Because he sees them as a huge club. They have been down for a few years but in Europe, Rangers are still a big club. So we’ll wait to see what they decide.

“The talks were very open. Michel has made it clear to the club he wants to be considered. He wants the job so if they want him, he will do it.

“I got a positive feeling after the talks with Rangers. I have to say they are very professional and they have made a good choice in Mark Allen as director of football. We know Mark and he has good contacts in Europe from his time as academy director at Manchester City.”

He has been giving the thumbs up by former Celtic striker Tony Watt who is currently playing for OH leuven in Belgium following spells at Lierse and Standard Liège.

Watt tweeted:” If Preud’homme becomes the next Rangers manager it’s a coup he’s a winner.”

“Michel had taken a sabbatical from football after winning the Belgian title with Brugge,” said his agent. “He has been very successful at his previous clubs but he was ready for a break.

“He’s now ready to come back. Mechelen are his club, he had eight years there and now they’re in trouble. So that would be a decision of his heart. But for now, we’re waiting on Rangers.”

Graeme Murty has expressed his interest in taking on the job after he led the team to a 3-1 victory over heart of Midlothian at BT Murrayfield following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha. Yet, Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes remains the favourite.
