Dundee United fans’ plan for Craig Whyte masks upsets Rangers

DUNDEE United fans have been accused of deliberately trying to cause trouble in what will already be a hostile environment at next month’s clash with Rangers - by wearing Craig Whyte masks.

A Tannadice supporters’ group has created a number of faces depicting the former Rangers owner in order to poke fun at the Ibrox club.

The game was the subject of attention when it emerged that Rangers fans had called for a boycott of the Scottish Cup clash over United’s treatment of the club during the summer, and the club’s refusal to refund Rangers fans after an SPL match between the two sides was abandoned due to adverse weather conditions.

General Secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association John McMillan has condemned the plans by United fans to wear the masks, calling it ‘inflammatory’ and insisting it was ‘disgraceful to even be thinking about it.’

Despite the proposed plans to stay away from the match, around 200 Rangers fans are expected to make the trip to Tayside, with McMillan urging fans of the Tannadice club not to goad the travelling supporters.

McMillan added: “I was anticipating the United supporters doing something but I didn’t think they would stoop to this. It’s out of order.

Dundee United should be doing all they can to prevent their fans from carrying this threat through.”

The plan appears to have been engineered by the A90 Arab Society supporters club, with a now-deleted Facebook post saying: “In tribute to the nemesis of the now-defunct Glasgow Rangers, we want 10,000 Arabs wearing a Craig Whyte mask at the Sevco Scottish Cup game.”

Club director Derek Robertson moved to distance himself from the proposed act, saying: “[The Facebook page] is unconnected to the club.

“But as we have already organised a meeting between supporters’ groups and the police I expect it’ll be raised then.”
