'Brilliant news': Rangers transfer gets seal of approval from respected coach

Meulensteen delighted to see midfielder earn Ibrox switch

Moving to Rangers is “brilliant news” for Cammy Devlin, according to one of the midfielder’s former coaches.

Devlin penned a two-year contract with Rangers earlier this month after leaving Scottish Premiership rivals Hearts on a free transfer. The 29-year-old was a key part of the Jambos’ squad that came so close to winning the title last season and was linked with clubs in the MLS before pledging his future to the Ibrox outfit, where he will team up again with manager Derek McInnes.

And respected coach Rene Meulensteen - who worked with Devlin while he was part of the Australia national team set-up - believes Devlin’s switch across the M8 will benefit both the player and Rangers.

“Joining Rangers is brilliant news for Cammy Devlin,” said Meulensteen, who was part of Graham Arnold’s staff at the Socceroos between 2018 and 2024. “I rate him highly. He is a top professional that every manager would want in his squad. He never complains and gets on with his job. He had an outstanding season last year and drove that Hearts team.

“He pushed them to the limit in midfield. It is great for him to go to a big club like Rangers that competes for the title. It is also good for Cammy and I hope he does well.”

Meulensteen also feels that Harry Souttar, who is an international teammate of Devlin’s, would be a good fit for West Ham. The London side are looking to rebuild after relegation from the English Premier League to the Championship and have targeted Leicester centre-half Souttar, who was born in Scotland and is the brother of Rangers man John Souttar.

“Harry is a Premier League defender in my opinion,” added Meulensteen, speaking to Andy’s Bet Club. “He is a top professional but has been very unlucky with injuries at Leicester.

“When he is fully fit he is a leader and was captain for the national team. I expect clubs in the Championship or even the Premier League to be looking at him.

“He would be a good buy for West Ham, absolutely.”
