The 39-year-old was interviewed for a similar role earlier this year under previous boss Pedro Caixinha, but missed out on the position to Jonatan Johansson.

The Rangers board are keen to get Ferguson back involved with the club in a coaching capacity, though it remains to be seen whether McInnes would be open to the idea.

The Aberdeen boss is the current favourite to take over the vacant manager’s role. Rangers are expected to make an official approach for his services in the next couple of days.

Ferguson has been working as a pundit for the BBC since quitting Clyde in February of this year.
