Ally McCoist calls on Rangers fans to listen to Ibrox naming plans

Rangers boss Ally McCoist has called on the club’s fans to listen to proposals to rename Ibrox, while backing the fans’ rights to protest against them.

McCoist said: “I can understand the business and finance side of it, but I can also understand the history and the tradition.

“There will be times where we’ll have to make decisions about the club that will not please the fans - but that doesn’t mean to say we shouldn’t listen to them.”

Rangers chief executive Charles Green was booed by a group of supporters from fans’ group The Union Bears when he addressed the crowd at Ibrox during Rangers’ 3-0 win over Annan on Tuesday. The group held up banners reading ‘Always Ibrox’. There were also violent scuffles outside Ibrox, with eight people arrested.

McCoist said: “I am 100 per cent behind the fans voicing their opinions - as long as it’s done in a legal way.

“I’ve gone on record as saying that we must listen to the fans.”

Green is believed to have seen a number of proposals for renaming Ibrox, including one from Newcastle United chairman and Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley.
