Kemar Roofe's wonder goal and the freak similarities to another great Rangers strike in Europe

But in a rare coincidence, the striker’s stunner is not the first time Rangers have hit a freak goal to catch out a Belgian goalkeeper.

Roofe’s will certainly live long in the memory – but so too does Scot Nisbet’s Champions League strike of 1993.

On another soaking night – indeed the last time Rangers faced Belgian opposition - the right-back was Gers’ unlikely hero when he sent a slippery, spinning strike sailing over Dany Verlinden in the Club Brugge net for an unforgettable European group stage goal.

It may not have been as dramatic or technically brilliant as Roofe’s but no-one who witnessed it will forget the freak finish – and no-one who watched tonight’s Rangers substitute score from his own half, in injury time, to end Standard Liege’s proud home European record after 15 matches, will either.
