How Alfredo Morelos' miss against St Johnstone helped him find the net for Rangers' second goal at St Mirren

Alfredo Morelos fired Rangers’ second goal in the first half against St Mirren, to send Steven Gerrard’s team 2-0 up at the interval.

And his glaring miss in Perth last week will have helped the Colombian find the net in Paisley, according to two former Rangers strikers.

BBC radio duo Steven Thompson and Billy Dodds believe the forward learned from his error last Wednesday, and atoned for his miss with a goal, capitalising on Joe Shaughnessy’s mistake to beat Jak Alnwick.

"Last week's miss probably help to make his mind up this week,” said Dodds. “He went for the hook shot and gave him the eyes and he probably thought I will keep it more the routine and straightforward and just slot it past the goalkeeper to his left.”

Thompson reflected: “I always felt if I was going through, if I could make my choice early enough and knew what I was going to do I wouldn't need to hesitate or change direction and I just made my mind up and went for it then it would happen for me. But on occasions when I had to maybe manipulate the ball or do something else other than my initial thought then I might not score."

Dodds added: “If you have two or three things going through your mind when you have a chance inevitably you will then miss.”

Morelos pulled his shot wide of Zander Clark’s goal last Wednesday but made no mistake in adding to Kemar Roofe’s deflected opener on the 32nd minute.
