The Rangers manager said the striker’s challenge on Murray Davidson - which brought a yellow card at the time - is not as bad as other “situations and challenges that don’t even get looked upon”.

Gerrard has called on authorities to install goal-line technology and find funding to make referees full-time as he maintains his calls for consistency across the disciplinary process.

He said: “There are far worse situations and challenges that don't even get looked upon. That's not right and we need to have a level of consistency.

“We must trust and support referees otherwise you’re going to have inconsistencies.

“The referees do a terrific job considering they are part-time but if we can give them more support financially to become full-time and introduce goal-line technology it will help improve the game for everyone in Scotland.”

The club expressed their disappointment that the summer signing from Anderlecht would be suspended following his Hampden hearing for the challenge in last week’s win over St Johnstone .

An Ibrox statement said: “Rangers FC recently called for consistency in the Scottish FA’s disciplinary process.

“There seems to be real confusion within the game regarding which incidents are cited and those that are not.

“This confusion solidifies our viewpoint regarding the current system.”

Rangers will be without Roofe and fellow suspended striker Alfredo Morelos for the weekend match with Kilmarnock after both were suspended via fast-track tribunal hearings.
