Five of the best Rangers goals in Europe - but is Kemar Roofe's the greatest ever?

Steven Gerrard has described it as the best goal he has ever witnessed at first hand during his 22-year professional career – but was Kemar Roofe’s wonder strike in Liege on Thursday night the greatest scored by Rangers in their 64-year history of European football?

There have, of course, been more significant goals – none more so than those scored by Colin Stein and Willie Johnston in the Ibrox club’s finest hour when they lifted the European Cup-Winners’ Cup in Barcelona in 1972.

It is difficult to argue that anything has ever eclipsed the individual brilliance, resilience, awareness and execution of Roofe’s extraordinary effort from inside his own half to seal the 2-0 win over Standard Liege.

But here are five other memorable Rangers’ goals in Europe which may just bear comparison:

Ally McCoist against Leeds United, 1992

Mark Hateley had already scored a stunning volley to put Rangers firmly in command of the ‘Battle of Britain’ Champions League tie at Elland Road, a goal worthy itself of consideration in any list of their finest in Europe. But that was arguably bettered by the exceptional second goal which killed off Leeds’ challenge, a sweeping counter attack which culminated in Hateley’s perfect cross being finished off by a diving header from Rangers’ all-time record European scorer McCoist.

Robert Fleck against Ilves Tampere, 1986

Fleck claimed a hat-trick in the Uefa Cup match at Ibrox but the goal which completed his treble will forever be recalled for the peerless skills of Davie Cooper. The late, great Rangers winger beat four opponents in a dazzling run before squaring the ball to Fleck for a tap-in.

Rod Wallace against Borussia Dortmund, 1999

One of the best team goals any Scottish team has scored in Europe. Starting from the edge of their own penalty area, Dick Advocaat’s side put 21 passes together in a sublime move which culminated in Arthur Numan and Jorg Albertz combining superbly to set Wallace up for an unerring one touch finish.

Ian Durrant againt Marseille, 1993

Trailing to a Franck Sauzee goal, Rangers hit back in style in the Champions League showdown away to Marseille when Durrant rifled an unstoppable right foot shot beyond Fabien Barthez.

Steven Whittaker against Sporting Lisbon, 2008

The undoubted pick of the goals from Rangers’ run to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final. Whittaker won possession in his own half before beating four challenges on a mazy run and providing a cool finish to seal the quarter-final triumph in Portugal.
