Many felt the forward’s challenge merited a red card and stronger punishment than David Munro’s yellow card after catching the Saints midfielder on the shin with his studs.

Davidson would be substituted shortly afterwards but others defended the striker, claiming the reaction was over the top and a genuine attempt was made to shield the ball.

The forward was replaced midway through the second half of an otherwise forgettable night lit up by Ianis Hagi’s fine finish for the winner that sends Rangers 23 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

@WilliamRFC1: "Just seen the Roofe tackle again oh dear that's a shocker man. That could be another ban coming our way. I think even he was surprised he wasn't sent off.”

@IainWatson3744: “Roofe was lucky to stay on tbf that was a bad yin.”

@rybrownx: “Roofe took a bad touch tried to shield the ball and caught the boy, it’s a red but the reaction is ott from some.”

@ross_stoddart: “Shocking isnt it? Roofe booked for putting the studs on a Davidson, yet Kane does the same to Davis and no yellow. Shocking.”

@Ryankentloyalis: Seen the Roofe tackle, don’t understand the fuss around it tbh, not intentional tries to use his leg to fend off the defender.”

@darylm89: “I don’t know if it was a red, hes made a genuine attempt to protect the ball ye would need to be a right cynical ******* to do that to anyone. Not sure Roofe's the type.”
