Maurice Edu made his point known on Instagram

Former Rangers star Maurice Edu has admitted he is “incredibly embarrassed and disappointed” at some of the comments from fans on social media following the team’s Black Lives Matter stance before the friendly with Lyon on Thursday.

The players took a knee prior to their fixture in France, which they won 2-0, and were joined by their opponents plus the coaching staff of both sides.

The club posted the striking images across their social media channels which prompted backlash from some supporters questioning the decision of the club and players to make the stance and the motives of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Some of the reaction has left many Rangers fans bewildered at the views of their fellow fans.

Edu, who made 125 appearances for the club between 2008 and 2012, was vocal on Instagram after he commented on the club’s Black Lives Matter post.

One fan asked the 34-year-old if he was “embarrassed” by comments.

Edu, now a pundit in his America, replied: “Incredibly embarrassed and disappointed. It’s honestly heartbreaking to see so many people sooo upset that the players and club decided to support the fight against systemic and blatant racism and social inequality.

"The comments really just highlight this problem that much more and expose people’s true colors and remind us that we have a long way to go with this fight.”

Current Ibrox star Jermain Defoe has said recently that he is hopeful the players continue with the gesture this season.

“I hope when the season starts we will take a knee and be part of this powerful movement," he said.

“At the end of the day, black lives matter. It is nice to see, black and white players, everyone is coming together."
