England legend Peter Shilton praises Rangers midfielder's international cap record appearance

England’s long-serving goalkeeper Peter Shilton has sent congratulations to Steven Davis, after the midfielder made his 125th appearance for Northern Ireland last night.

The Rangers midfielder was named in Ian Barraclough’s starting line-up against Italy to kick-off the World Cup 2022 qualifiers in Parma.

The home side ran out 2-0 winners, but Davis was also a winner – landing his 125th cap to equal the appearance record for a British footballer, alongside Shilton.

The goalkeeper, who played in two World Cups with England during a 30-year career tweeted Rangers and Northern Ireland to praise the 36-year-old’s achievement.

He wrote: “Congratulations to Steven Davis of Rangers and Northern Ireland on equalling my England cap record of 125 against Italy. Such a great achievement for a midfield player.”

Davis now holds the overall record for an outfied player having surpassed Wayne Rooney’s tally of 121 caps last year and could take the overall title next Wednesday by leading his national side against Bulgaria.
