Coronavirus outbreak hits Rangers' Europa League opponents

The Gers won 2-0 in Belgium last month after the Jupiler Pro League outfit had been affected by a similar outbreak of the virus.

Now Philippe Montanier will be without a host of players on Thursday night after they returned positive Covid-19 tests.

Defensive trio Collins Fai, Konstantinos Laifis, and Moussa Sissako are all self-isolating with midfielders Damjan Pavlovic and Eden Shamir also in quarantine.

Forward Abdoul Fessal Tapsoba also misses out along with club captain Zinho Vanheusden, who is sidelined through injury.

A Standard statement read: "The results of the latest Covid-19 tests unfortunately indicate that six players are positive: Collins Fai, Konstantinos Laifis, Damjan Pavlovic, Eden Shamir, Moussa Sissako and Abdoul Fessal Tapsoba.

“These players will therefore not be part of the delegation which will fly to Poland on Wednesday morning.”

Rangers host Standard on December 3, facing Benfica away and at home this month, with the Belgians doing likewise with their Ekstraklasa opponents.

Steven Gerrard’s side and the Lisbon outfit are both on six points after winning their first two matches while Lech Poznan and Standard remain on zero points.

Since their 2-0 defeat at home to Rangers, Standard have lost 2-0 at Sint-Truiden and 3-0 at Benfica and recorded a 1-0 win at home to Oostende.

Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar tested positive for coronavirus in September but the Liga Nos outfit have not reported any recent cases.
