The Premier League club have had an offer for Wigan Athletic teenager Sean McGurk rejected with the Latics deeming it short of their valuation of the player.

According to transfer specialist Alan Nixon, it could open the door for the Old Firm to battle it out for his signature.

McGurk is out of contract at the end of the campaign meaning Celtic and Rangers can nab him on a pre-contract agreement.

Such a move has been a popular one for the Glasgow giants with the clubs able to offer the possibility of European football and a better pathway into the first-team than many Premier League sides.

Scottish sides can benefit from out of contract players in England.

The Premier League and Football League have rules and regulations in place for a player under the age of 24 moving between to English clubs.

Clubs north of the border don’t have to pay nearly as much compensation.

Who is Sean McGurk?

The Liverpool fan hit the headlines nearly a year ago with a goal for Wigan in the FA Youth Cup against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The 17-year-old crashed the ball in off the underside of the bar before wheeling away to celebrate by noting how many times the Anfield club have won the European Cup / Champions League.

McGurk, an attacking midfielder, has yet to make his debut for the Wigan first-team.

The Latics, who sit second bottom of League One, are in a difficult financial position and would likely cash in on the player this month.
