Benfica pair Darwin Nunez and Julian Weigl set to miss Rangers match at Ibrox in Europa League

The Benfica striker who scored the last-gasp equaliser against Rangers earlier this month may miss the return match in the Europa League group stage, reports suggest.

Darwin Nunez ran through on Rangers’ defenders Connor Goldson and Filip Helander in the closing stages of the previous match with the score poised at 3-2 in the visitors’ favour, and the Uruguayan beat Allan McGregor to maintain the Eagles’ home record and salvage a point from Steven Gerarrd’s side.

However both he, and former Borussia Dortmund man Julian Weigl, are unlikely to re-play the move at Ibrox next week after both tested positive for covid-19 on international duty.

They are out of Jorge Jesus’ plans for the weekend’s cup match with Paredes and doubtful to be eligible for travel to Scotland for next Thursday’s European matchday, according to Lisbon-based newspaper Publico.

Benfica have paid a Portguese record for Nunez’ services, and the South American is continuing to attract interest from elsewhere in Europe, as is German midfielder Weigl.
