Alfredo Morelos v Ally McCoist: 21 Rangers goals in Europe

Alfredo Morelos matched Ally McCoist’s Rangers European goal record last week – and this week he could BEAT it and rob the Ibrox icon one of his many scoring accomplishments.

The club’s all-time time top goal scorer’s record has sat for almost a quarter of a century since he notched his 21st continental goal against GI Gotu in 1997. But 23 years later, Colombian Morelos matched the tally with a header against Lech Poznan in last week’s Europa League group stage match at Ibrox.

McCoist is still the all-time leading Scottish-based goalscorer in European competition but a goal against Benfica, Standard Liege or another against Poznan – or even beyond further in the competition, could give Morelos the top spot.

Here we look back at how both achieved each of their 21 goals – McCoist across 54 games from 1984 to 1997 and Morelos’ between a goal against NK Osijek in July 2018 and last week’s super-sub appearance against Lech Poznan.
