Rangers v Eintracht Frankfurt RECAP: Heartbreak for Rangers in Europa League final

Rangers faltered at their final Europa League hurdle with a cruel 5-4 penalty shootout defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

Joe Aribo had the Gers fans in raptures in the searing heat of the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium when he opened the scoring in the 57th minute.

However, Colombia forward Rafael Borre levelled in the 68th minute to give the game 30 added minutes where Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp made a fantastic last-gasp save from Ryan Kent.

Then came penalties and despair for the Light Blues and substitute Aaron Ramsey in particular who had his spot-kick saved.

The match finished in heartbreak for the Premiership team.

Tavernier first ...

The Rangers captain wins the toss and penalties will be taken at the Rangers end. He scores to give Rangers the lead in the shoot-out.

And that’s it. The match is over .... penalty kicks will decide the winner of the Europa League. Will Alan McGregor be the hero in what could be his last game for Rangers? It’s all about who holds their nerve. Strap in folks!

120: Tavernier to win it ...

Rangers win a free-kick on the edge of the box in the final minute of extra-time. Tavernier steps up to take it and fires a good effort towards the top corner but Trapp is across to make the save. The German keeper has kept his team in this final in the closing stages of extra-time.

118: Huge Rangers chance!

What a chance for Rangers to win it! Roofe’s first involvement is a cross into the box that finds Kent running in just six yads out but goalkeeper Trapp makes an unbelievable point-blank save with his legs. That would have almost certainly won the cup for Rangers. Kent has his head in his hands. He can’t believe it.

116: Rangers double change

Kemar Roofe and Aaron Ramsey are on with just three minutes left, almost certainly with penalties in mind. Borna Barisic has run himself to a standstill and has finally succumbed to cramp. Sakala, who was only brought on in the second half also makes way.

106: Barisic piledriver, Frankfurt reply

The Croatian steps into space 25 yards and sends a left-foot shot towards the Frankfurt goal that Trapp can only block with his fists before the defence scramble clear. At the other end Hrustic sends a shot narrowly wide from 20 yards. Action at both ends.

105: HT in extra-time

Still no Aaron Ramsey or Kemar Roofe for Rangers. There must be fitness issues there? 15 minutes left for someone to make themselves a hero. Or it’s all down to the shoot-out. One last push to make history.

A defensive change on the face of it - as Jamie Sands replaces goalscorer Joe Aribo - but the switch sees Scott Arfield push forward into the front three. Fresh legs vital as Rangers look to build on some good possession they’ve enjoyed in extra-time thus far.

Bassey slips to allow Borre through on goal but the Nigerian international makes an amazing recovery to get a block on the shot at the expense of a Frankfurt corner. Bassey has been immense all night and that just sums up his performance.

Rangers are the first side to threaten in extra-time as a surging run down the left from Sakala ends with a shot from Arfield from distance rising over the bar.
