Rangers' Joey Barton savages England boss Roy Hodgson

Former England international and recent Rangers signing Joey Barton has savaged national team boss Roy Hodgson following the Three Lions 1-1 draw with Russia on Saturday night.

Barton made several criticisms of the England manager and his handling of the team, not just tactically but also the coach’s lack of inspirational qualities.

Scotland will face the Auld Enemy in qualification for the 2018 World Cup and Barton insists Tartan Army members are hoping Hodgson and England get their act together enough so the under-pressure boss remains in a job, thereby strengthening Scotland’s chances of making their first major tournament in 20 years.

He said: “I’ve spoken to Scotland fans who are hoping Hodgson does just well enough to keep his job. I’d be the same if I was in their shoes.

“He’s not a leader. You wouldn’t follow him, would you? He’s not energetic. He looks boring. He looks like he’d drain the energy out of you because he’s a worrier.

“You have to give him credit for picking a really positive side to begin with but when the pressure is on he defaults to his negative, pragmatic self.

“That game was crying out for Jamie Vardy to come on in a wide area at 70 minutes. Everyone in the stadium could see it.”
