Rangers '˜have to go and win the league'

Miller and Danny Wilson are the only two Rangers players to have become Scottish champions at Ibrox but the 37-year-old is confident that every member of the squad knows that only winning the title will be acceptable for the Ladbrokes Premiership newcomers.

“There’s one thing to have the aim,” Miller said. “It’s an expectation here, it’s a demand. It’s not ‘we want to do it’, we must do it.

“We have to go and win the league, we have to be successful in cup competitions, because this club demands it, the manager (Mark Warburton) and Davie (Weir) demand it every single day from us in training. Every player needs to have that mindset.

“The manager was quoted a lot last season saying that second is nothing here, we need to go and win the league. If we don’t then we need to at least mount the best challenge we can and be the best we can every single game we are going to play.

“And with the signings we have made, there is a real signal of intent that that is the aim, that is the expectation, and that’s the demands that will be put on us as players for the rest of the season.”

Rangers have brought in former QPR players Joey Barton, Clint Hill and Niko Kranjcar along with experienced goalkeeper Matt Gilks, former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Rossiter and both Matt Crooks and Josh Windass from Accrington.

Warburton is also looking for a striker and a full-back before the transfer window closes.

“With the squad we had last year, we were in a good place,” Miller said. “With the right additions in the right positions, I always said we would have an opportunity to challenge this year, because there is no other goal. It’s not a case of consolidation, it’s not a case of top six or European football, it’s win the league that’s the goal.

“The signings we have made and the work we have done so far is a real signal that that is going to be the case.

“The quality of these players, the levels that these guys have played at all through their careers, even the young lads and the clubs they have played for - Jordan playing for Liverpool and the education he had at that football club - it will only stand us in good stead for the season up and coming. Added to an already good squad, by the way.”
