Rangers 'close' to David Healy deal

Rangers say they are close to agreeing a contract extension with David Healy.

The Northern Ireland international, 31, enjoyed an injury-interrupted spell at Ibrox last term but has apparently done enough to earn a new deal under boss Ally McCoist.

A statement on the club's official website, www.rangers.co.uk, read: "It is expected that paperwork will be completed this afternoon and we will bring you the news when we get it."

However, uncertainty remains over the future of captain David Weir.

The 41-year-old defender is out of contract this summer and may have to wait to discover if he is part of McCoist's plans for next term.

Coach Ian Durrant hopes Weir has a future at Ibrox.

Durrant said: "Davie is a great person around the dressing room and has been our leader for the last four years.

"Hopefully he and the boss can come to an agreement."
