Rangers chief Dave King explains ten-in-a-row comments

Rangers chairman Dave King has stood by his controversial comments that Celtic have only won two-in-a-row by insisting the ten-in-a-row measure only applies to the two Glasgow rivals.

King caused quite a stir at the weekend when he said he did not believe Celtic would make it to ten-in-a-row because they needed to win the next eight titles, claiming that because Rangers were not in the top flight for four of Celtic’s last six title wins, they didn’t count towards the record.

He’s since clarified those statements by insisting “ten-in-a-row” is exclusively a head-to-head battle between Celtic and Rangers. Therefore, although Celtic have been Scottish champions six seasons in a row, they only sit at two-in-a-row on King’s scale.

He told the Telegraph: “I was making an argument that the context of the rivalry about nine or 10 in a row does not relate to any clubs other than Rangers or Celtic. It’s not an insult to Scottish football, as some have said. It’s nothing to do with Scottish football.

“I’ve never, ever heard an Aberdeen fan, Motherwell or Falkirk fan talk about ‘ten in a row’. It’s something to do with Celtic and Rangers alone and for anyone to say otherwise is just wrong. It’s nonsense.

“It’s a competition between these two clubs, against each other, dominating each other – and that can’t happen unless they’re playing at the same level, which didn’t occur for a while until we came back into the Scottish Premiership. As I see it, my contention is a perfectly logical point of view.”
