In the first half McGregor, who was Rangers’ man of the match, punched clear a cross before the Norwegian defender landed on top of him as he tried to reach the ball.

As he was getting to his feet the Scotland international appeared to kick out at Ajer. Referee Willie Collum seemed to see the coming together but the kick may have been obscured by players in a crowded box.

It was expected that McGregor would face retrospective punishment when reviewed by the Scottish FA.

Yet, it did not reach the SFA’s Fast Track proceedings after three former match officials could not reach an unanimous agreement having been consulted.

McGregor is clear to play in the club’s next fixture when Dundee visit Ibrox on 15 September.

In recent weeks Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has had a red card rescinded for a kick at Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna, while Steven Naismith faced no action for a similar action to McGregor’s during Hearts’ 1-0 win over Celtic in August.
