Queen of the South 2 - 0 Morton: Queens win big

QUEENS got their first home win in the league since the opening day of the season to leave Morton languishing at the bottom of the Championship.

Morton, who have only won once at Dumfries in the league in the past 25 years, should have taken the lead after just two minutes when Joe McKee’s free kick from the right picked out the unmarked Dougie Imrie, whose first-time drive from 12 yards was touched over by goalkeeper Zander Clark.

Queens, who had failed to win at home in the league in their previous five outings, made Morton pay when they took the lead after six minutes. Danny Carmichael whipped over a cross from the right and Gavin Reilly,
eight yards out, bulleted a header past goalkeeper Derek Gaston.

The Doonhamers doubled their lead in 18 minutes when Chris Higgins’ cross from the left wasn’t cleared properly by Mark McLaughlin and the ball fell perfectly for Ian McShane to drill the ball home from 15 yards for his first goal in senior football.

Queens should have put the contest beyond doubt three minutes after the restart when Reilly burst between defenders McLaughlin and Tomas Peciar, but he blazed over from the edge of the area.
