PSG 1-1 Valencia: PSG through after fight back

Ezequiel Lavezzi scored the equaliser as Paris Saint-Germain drew 1-1 with Valencia to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 1995 – and they did not need to call on David Beckham to do it.

PSG won 3-2 on aggregate

The England international was left on the bench despite three subsitutions by the French side who went through 3-2 on aggregate.

PSG had won the away leg of their last-16 match 2-1 in Spain and seemed content to sit back in a dull first half in which the visitors mustered just two rather tame shots on target. The match came to life in the 55th minute when Brazilian forward Jonas profited from PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi’s error to pick up the loose ball and score with a fierce shot from 20 yards out.

PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti then brought on substitute Kevin Gameiro shortly afterwards and his surging run led to Lavezzi’s equaliser in the 66th, as the Argentina winger knocked the ball in after Gameiro’s initial shot had been saved.

The Ligue 1 leaders, who have not lost at their Parc des Princes home in 23 European matches since 2006, last played in the last eight of Europe’s premier club competition in 1995 when they reached the semi-finals.
