Paul Gascoigne faces charge over '˜racist joke'
The former England player allegedly made a crude joke about a black bouncer at one of his An Evening With Gazza shows in England.
The 49-year-old, who has struggled with alcoholism for years, allegedly made the comment at Wolverhampton Civic Centre in November.
He is due to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court on 17 June 17 to answer the summons and be charged with the offence, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
Police received a complaint following the show on 30 November last year and investigated the former England, Newcastle United, Spurs and Everton star.
It is understood the decision on whether to proceed with a prosecution has been with CPS lawyers since then.
His agent, Terry Baker, confirmed the CPS was going ahead but had no further comment to make.
