Olton puts finishing touch to Windsor's win

SUPER sub Cameron Olton produced a moment of sheer magic when he came on for Musselburgh Windsor in the second-last minute of a great under-15 Scottish Cup final against Woodside Boys' Club to score what proved to the clinching goal in a 3-1 win.

And how this terrific young squad player rewarded his coaches' bravery for putting him on with the score still at 2-1 and the Fifers going all out for an equaliser.

But, all credit to the Musselburgh Windsor coaches for making sure every boy in the squad had a chance to take part in a Scottish Cup final - and what a payoff it produced!

No sooner had Olton taken his place on the pitch when Musselburgh broke up the right and a great crossball was sent into the danger area where the sub had taken up position. What followed should remain in the memory of the Musselburgh boy for ever - his half-volley from ten yards out flashing past the Woodside goal to make it 3-1!

The goal could not have come at a better time for the East Lothian outfit and it certainly could not have come at a better time, too, for Cameron Olton!

What a wonderful moment for this likeable youngster and he disappeared under a mound of his team-mates wanting to congratulate him.

Cup finals have a habit of producing something special and this goal was certainly one of these wonderful moments.

Windsor chairman Scott Robertson whose club is fast-becoming one of the biggest of its kind in Scottish youth football, said after the success: "It was just a fantastic day out for us all!" It took Windsor a while to get the better of Woodside's offside tactics of defending high up the pitch and time after time Windsor strikers Kris Renton and Darren Flynn were caught out.

It was very frustrating to see a young team play this type of game, but it brought an early reward for Woodside with their goal coming in the 18th minute when a cross from the right landed nicely for the unmarked Gary Thomson to fire home.

But it was not long before Windsor were back on level terms, Renton beating the offside trap wide on the right before running into plant the ball in the Woodside net to make it 1-1. Musselburgh's second counter in the eighth minute of the second half was a real gift, the poor offside trap giving Flynn time and space to fire the ball past the unprotected Woodside keeper to take the score to 2-1.

Renton went close to adding to the total, but his great shot was well dealt with by the Woodside goalkeeper.

• TYNECASTLE suffered a crushing disappointment when they lost 2-1 in extra time in their under-16 Scottish Cup final against a very good Crosshouse Boys' Club outfit from Ayrshire.

The Edinburgh club had more than their share of the play but they did not have anyone capable of sticking the ball in the net, despite creating several clear-cut chances.

A lack of confidence in front of goal proved to be the downfall of the Tynecastle side, while Crosshouse looked a lot more dangerous when on the attack.

After a long period of hectic action at both ends of the pitch, it was Crosshouse who opened the scoring when a Brad Lennox corner from the left was headed into the net at the back post by Barry Armstrong.

That goal was against the run of play, but Tynecastle had only themselves to blame for failing to get shots on target and also for poor defensive play at corners.

The Edinburgh club brought on Benji Antoni at the start of the second half and he went close to squaring the game, his brilliant net-bound effort tipped over the bar by outstanding Crosshouse goalie, Scott Chisholm.

Then Chisholm was again in action when beating out a Steve MacDonald effort.

Graeme Hill again went close to scoring for Tynecastle and then MacDonald missed a great opportunity to open his side's account.

All appeared to be lost as the game entered time added on for stoppages.

However, after piling on the pressure throughout the match, Tynecastle eventually got the goal they richly deserved.

A huge Michael Dick free-kick from the right was knocked into the net at the far post by MacDonald.

What a lift that should have given Tynecastle, but it didn't work out that way in extra time. The Ayrshire side were quick to establish their lead shortly into the first half of the extra period, with a goal that was a replica of that scored by MacDonald.

Again, it came from a free-kick away out on the right and Martin Brown came in at the back post to head what proved to the clinching goal of the game.
