Old Firm semi '˜will be test of Mark Warburton's philosophy'

Morton manager Jim Duffy imagines next month's Old Firm semi-final will be one of the most open Celtic v Rangers derbies in recent memory.

Both like to play expansive attacking football and, if each side stick to their guns, there will be a lot of room to operate around defenders on the large Hampden Park surface.

While Rangers will fancy their chances of causing an upset, Duffy wonders whether it would be right for Mark Warburton to stick with his usual approach.

The Rangers manager has often insisted his side only know one style of play and will continue attacking teams regardless of the opposition’s strengths.

Duffy wonders if Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths, top scorer in the Ladbrokes Premiership, will prove to be too much of a threat for Rangers to deal with if the second tier league leaders go after Celtic.

He said: “They both play very open, that is the first thing, so I am interested to see whether any of them adapt when the two teams come up against each other.

“If they do play the same style they play most weeks it could be one of the most open Old Firm games in a long time.

“They both leave a lot of space in the middle, which they are both good at playing through, so I am looking forward to who blinks first really.

“This is a very good Championship, as good a Championship as you can imagine really, but it is still the Championship. Although there are some good players in this division, you don’t come up against players with the quality of Leigh Griffiths. If Rangers do push the full backs on, Griffiths will thrive in that space.

“Mark Warburton has stated quite publicly that he won’t change his philosophy, so it will be a test of that statement.”
