Napier sparks Heriot-Watt

Heriot-Watt University have blown the race for the Central Taxis Premier Division championship wide open after they won 2-0 against Stirling University, the current title holders and challengers for this season’s top spot.

Two goals from Ronnie
Napier in the closing stages of the first half ensured that the Riccarton-based students picked up all three points to help guarantee their top-flight safety.

Aaron James set up Napier to score at the near post and then the dynamic midfielder scored his second with a 30-yard shot.

Stirling had plenty of the ball but did not seriously trouble the Heriot-Watt defence and Stirling have now lost three consecutive games and have failed to score in each of them.

“That was a big result for us,” said the Heriot-Watt head coach, Michael Renwick. “We worked really hard, kept a clean sheet and were deserving winners. It was very pleasing and shows that we are a match for all the teams in the Premier
Division.”

In the First Division, Leith Athletic enhanced their promotion prospects with a 4-1 victory against Ormiston after trailing at half time.

Craigroyston’s promotion hopes were dashed when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Easthouses Lily in a game which saw both teams finish with nine men.

Danny Watson and Jamie Shields were red-carded for Easthouses while Jordan Low and Steve Moncur were both sent off for Craigroyston.

Elsewhere, Kelso United beat Berwick Rangers Reserves 3-2 while Gretna 2008 continued with their run of good form beating Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale 2-1 at Saughton Enclosure.
