Motherwell v Dundee United game called off due to power cut

MOTHERWELL’S clash with Dundee United at Fir Park was today abandoned due to a power cut.

• SPL game between Motherwell and Dundee United abandoned

• 250 properties also affected by power cut

• Wishaw General Hospital unaffected

Around 250 properties in Lanarkshire were affected by the power cut.

Motherwell’s SPL game with Dundee United was called off at the last minute after the power failed just before the 3pm kick-off.

However the NHS denied suggestions that Wishaw General hospital had been affected.

A spokesman for ScottishPower said: “We had reports of power failure from around 2.50pm in the Motherwell area, which affected around 250 properties.

“We had engineers out right away to investigate a suspected cable fault and the power was back on around 4pm.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to any of our customers, but our engineers worked as quickly as possible to rectify the problem.”

Fans at Fir Park, Motherwell’s ground, were furious after the second cancellation in the space of 12 months. Last December a match with Hibs was axed at half-time due to a floodlight fire.

Motherwell FC’s chief executive Leanne Dempster said: “We are frustrated. We have generators which give us emergency power, to enable us to evacuate the stadium, but it’s not enough to run a full match, I’m afraid.

Supporters will get a ticket allowing them in to the next game,” she added.

A spokeswoman for NHS Lanarkshire said: “There were no power problems at Wishaw General whatsoever.”
