Miller draws Vale over Borderers' Cup hopes

Vale of Leithen 0 Preston Athletic 1

A GOAL from Stuart Miller in the 72nd minute was enough to ensure Preston a place in the King Cup semi-final as they became only the second East of Scotland side to defeat Vale this season.

It was a disciplined performance by the East Lothian side as they had to soak up some pressure from their opponents in a first half that took place mainly in the Preston half. For all their possession, Vale found getting past a Preston defensive wall strung along the 18 yard line tough going.

Athletic began to get a foothold in the game in the second half and came close when a Gary Wales cross just eluded Chris Manson at the far post. But the visitors did take the lead shortly afterwards as another deep Wales cross found Miller, who sent a header over the head of Vale keeper Mark Wilson and into the net.

It was mainly a case of slowing the game down after that for Preston, although a powerful volley from Wales brought a good save from Wilson five minutes from time.
