Merge teams to form super clubs says ex-Dons chief

A FORMER Chief Executive of Aberdeen FC has suggested that certain teams should merge with neighbouring teams to form ‘super clubs’ in order to save the Scottish game.

Dave Cormack, who was at the Pittodrie believes that bringing several teams under one banner would help them compete at a higher level, and make better use of resources.

Cormack’s plan includes a merger between both Dundee clubs, Arbroath, Brechin, and Montrose to form what would be known as Tayside United; Raith, Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath joining forces as a Fife super club, and a ‘Club Ecosse’ created in Glasgow to compete with Celtic and Rangers.

Cormack suggested that in order to ‘garner support and maximise affinity’, Club Ecosse could play home games throughout Scotland, renting and playing at the likes of Murrayfield, Hampden and Pittodrie.

The recent 12-12-18 league reconstruction has, in part, prompted Cormack’s proposal, along with clubs in the SPL not being able to compete with third tier English sides in terms of wages and transfer fees.
