While Rangers still have the small matter of the Scottish Cup final with Hibernian coming up a week on Saturday, work is already well underway on building a team capable of challenging for next season’s Scottish Premiership crown.

They’ve been linked with a number of potential signing targets, including Livingston youngster Matthew Knox and Sunderland striker Danny Graham, though Warburton wouldn’t name any names as he spoke to the official Rangers website.

Having stormed to the Championship title this past season with a relatively small squad, Warburton recognises that it’ll need to be expanded upon for the rigours of top flight football, not to mention a possible Europa League run should they defeat Hibs at Hampden. However, he still wants to retain healthy competition for places within his unit.

He told Rangers TV: “A lot of work has been done at this point and we’re very close now on two or three very good recruits.

“We know what we need, we know the areas we need to strengthen, we know we have a good core to the squad now, but there is no doubt that going to the next level where – if hopefully all goes well against Hibs with European football as well – that we have to make sure we have the strength and depth.

“So we run the risk this year, we knew what we were doing in terms of a lean squad, but we must never lose sight of the fact that every player must see a pathway to the first team.

“If we get that wrong then I think the unity of the group will suffer.”
