Malpas aims to revive Caley cup tradition

Inverness assistant manager Maurice Malpas is desperate to atone for some recent cup disappointments as the Highlanders face Stenhousemuir tonight.

Caley Thistle have reached two Scottish Cup quarter-finals in four seasons under Terry Butcher and Malpas, but have not progressed to the latter stages of the League Cup.

They have the chance to make the last eight at Ochilview tonight and Malpas wants the same application as they showed against Arbroath when they won 2-0 in the second round.

“Since we have come here our record in the cups has been quite poor,” Malpas said. “The club has a great tradition of upsetting the odds and getting to semi-finals, and that’s something we are trying to put right. In the past we have probably concentrated more on league games the following week and messed about with the team. That hasn’t been the case this season and it won’t be against Stenhousemuir.

“They’re a good team and an attacking team, but we have to make sure we impose ourselves on the game like we did against Arbroath and get a result.”

The Stenhousemuir players have been asked to repeat the performance they put in to defeat cup holders Kilmarnock 2-1 in the last round. Manager Martyn Corrigan said: “When we won that game everyone in the team put in a tremendous shift and we will need that approach again.

“We were very brave that night and we will also need to stay as organised as we did to secure that win to have a chance in this game.”

Striker John Gemmell, who was the match-winner against Kilmarnock, is available after a two game ban with Corrigan’s only injury doubts being defender Scott Buist and midfielder Brown Ferguson.
