MacDonald steps down at Hamilton

Ronnie MacDonald has stepped down as chairman of Hamilton Accies and has resigned as a director with immediate effect.

MacDonald, who has been chairman for the past nine years, will be replaced in his role at the Irn-Bru First Division club by Les Gray.

MacDonald confirmed on the club’s website: “As you will be aware, Allan McGonigal and Allan Maitland were appointed directors of the club last month. This strengthening of the board was essential as I am now passing the chairmanship to Les Gray and resigning as a director with immediate effect.

“When taking control at Accies nine years ago, my only stated objective was to leave the club and the stadium in a healthier condition than I found it.

“With the help of many people, this, I believe, has been achieved, and I would like to thank them all for their efforts.”

MacDonald reserved special praise for Billy Reid, the Hamilton manager, adding: “I must make special mention to Billy Reid for his achievements in developing players and giving the club our most successful era of league performances. It is just a pity we could not have stayed top of the Premier League.

“In conclusion, I wish the club continued success in enhancing its position as an essential part of the community of South Lanarkshire.”
