LOUIS van Gaal wants to become the next manager of Manchester United.

The Holland coach will be a free agent after this summer’s World Cup and a source close to the Dutchman said: “Louis would love the United job. Manchester United is his No 1 choice.”

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and Broussia Dortmud gaffer Jurgen Klopp are also in the running to replace David Moyes, who was sacked after losing the support of the players and boardroom at Old Trafford. (The Sun)

ST MIRREN manager Danny Lennon has accused Hibs midfielder Kevin Thomson of conning the referee to get Jim Goodwin sent off.

Goodwin was dismissed by whistler Kevin Clancy for his challenge on Thomson after 29 minutes of Saturday’s 2-0 win for the Paisley side.

But Lennon said: “The opponent grossly overreacted to make the tackle look like something it wasn’t. I feel for referees as players are trying to manipulate them and there is no place for that.” (Daily Express)

BRENDAN Rodgers has revealed how Celtic have been influential in bringing Liverpool to the brink of their first Premiership title in 24 years.

The Anfield manager, who grew up in County Antrim in Northern Ireland and was fanatical about the Hoops, said: “I loved it when they were on TV. They had special players. Paul McStay was a wonderful, influential player, Danny McGrain was brilliant and they had Packie Bonner in goal.

“I want to see players in my team like a Paul McStay or a Chris Waddle - great attacking players of their generation.” (The Sun)

RANGERS keeper Cammy Bell was warned he might die if he played against Dundee United.

Bell spoke of his agony at seeing a blunder by deputy Steve Simonsen seal the Ibrox club’s exit from the Scottish Cup, but said he was under orders not to pay.

Days earlier Bell had been knocked out cold and he said: “Another concussion could have been fatal.” (Daily Record)

ALEX McLeish has warned Hibs can’t afford to be relegated because it will be harder to bounce back to the top flight than when they dropped into the First Division in 1998.

McLeish was in charge when the Easter Road side were relegated but they won the league at a canter and finished third in the top flight the next season.

But McLeish warned: “When you look at the Championship, with Rangers and Hearts, it would be much more difficult to get back up. That shouldn’t be in Hibs’ players minds right now - they must remember they are in a stronger position than Ross County with a three-point gap to protect.” (Daily Record)
