Luis Suarez offered anger management after bite

LUIS Suarez has been fined by Liverpool Football Club, and offered anger management counselling by the PFA, after television pictures showed him biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a match between the two sides.

Suarez, who tweeted an apology late on Sunday, posted two updates on Monday morning, confirming that he had been fined by the club and had requested that the money be donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

He tweeted: “For my unacceptable behaviour yesterday the club has fined me today, I have asked the club to donate the money to...”

“to the Hillsborough Family Support Group for the inconvenience I have created to the Liverpool fans and to Ivanovic.”

It transpired today that Ivanovic had spoken to Surrey Police about the incident, after Merseyside Police passed on a complaint regarding the incident, but the Serbian defender told police he did not want to press charges.

The Uruguayan striker hit the headlines for a similar incident whilst at former club Ajax, in which he was seen biting an opponent and drawing blood.

Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness labelled the incident as “embarrassing” and believes Suarez is now in the “last chance saloon” as a Reds player.

“I’m not sure what to make of it really, embarrassing,” he said in his punditry role on Sky Sports 1. “A football club’s board of directors’ job is to attract and get the best players and keep them at the football club. He is making it very difficult for himself to stay at Liverpool, I believe that puts him in the last chance saloon.

“More important than any of that is to safeguard the good name of the football club. This club is a world renowned football club. It is up there with any Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, it is up there with any of them.”

Souness believes the incident came at a bad time for Liverpool, who this week marked the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. The 59-year-old pointed to Suarez’s chequered past that has seen him involved in several controversies.

“People will be talking about this for a long, long time and it’s going to show Liverpool in a very bad light – especially in this week of all weeks, anniversary of Hillsborough,” he added.

Referee Kevin Friend did not see the incident but after numerous television replays highlighted it, the FA said it would begin an investigation into the incident as early as today.
