Jurgen Klopp in at Liverpool, Gary McAllister out

It is understood all negotiations have been concluded with the former Borussia Dortmund head coach, who flew into Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport yesterday via private jet from his home town. Klopp is expected to sign a three-year contract.

His arrival has resulted in a clear-out of many of predecessor Brendan Rodgers’ backroom staff.

First-team coach Gary McAllister and assistant manager Sean O’Driscoll – who were only brought in over the summer in an overhaul of coaching personnel – have left their posts.

Head of performance Glen Driscoll and head of opposition analysis Chris Davies, who followed Rodgers to Anfield from Swansea in 2012, have also lost their jobs.

It is believed former Scotland captain McAllister has been offered a role of an ambassadorial nature within the club but has yet to decide whether to take it up.

He took training yesterday along with one member of staff, Pep Lijnders, promoted in the summer from the club’s academy as a player development coach, who has kept his job.

Changes to the coaching staff were inevitable as Klopp wants to bring in the trusted men he had beside him during his success at Borussia Dortmund.

Bosnian Zeljko Buvac, Klopp’s assistant both at Dortmund and Mainz before that, and coach Peter Krawietz are set to link up again when the German takes the reins at Anfield.

The capture of the 48-year-old Klopp, rated as one of Europe’s top coaches, is a major coup for Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group, who moved swiftly and decisively to appoint Rodgers’ successor after he was sacked following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Everton.

It will be Klopp’s first job outside Germany, where he made his name as an extrovert, a maverick and an innovative coach – particularly in a seven-year stint at Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles and reached the Champions League final.
