Ex-St Mirren ace Dummett abused over Suarez injury

Despite the news yesterday that the Liverpool striker has a reasonable chance of making the World Cup, Dummett was targeted on Twitter by one Uruguay supporters who tweeted: “We hope someday you come here to have a nice time with friends. We have things for you, like a bullet in the head” while another added: “We kill you.”

Dummett, who won a League Cup medal during his time in Paisley, was sent off after a 50-50 challenge with Suarez on the final day of the English Premier League season that left the Uruguayan writhing on the turf in pain.

But the defender’s red card was later rescinded, and cleared of any wrongdoing by the FA.

Suarez had surgery on his left knee yesterday but is expected to recover in time for the World Cup.

The Liverpool forward felt a sharp pain when he was training with the national team yesterday. He underwent a scan that confirmed a cartilage injury.

“This morning he underwent an arthroscopy to repair his meniscus. . . No other injuries were found in his knee,” the Uruguay football association said. “His participation in the World Cup in Brazil is not ruled out.”

Suarez’s mother also commented on the operation. “The surgery is over and thank God everything went well. What Luis had wasn’t as serious as we thought,” Sandra Diaz said.

She said he remains in hospital but is in good spirits.

“He’s very well. He’s going to play the World Cup,” said Diaz, who was taking care of the striker’s children while he underwent surgery.

Suarez himself told the local El Pais newspaper: “Take it easy because I’m going to make it [to the World Cup] and will work very hard to be at 100 per cent and help out my team-mates.”

The striker is expected to be out for two to three weeks. Uruguay’s first match at the World Cup is against Costa Rica on 14 June. They then face England on 19 June and Italy on 24 June.
