Liam Fontaine tweets heartfelt message after final error

Hibs defender Liam Fontaine has taken to social media to express his sorrow after a late error contributed to the club's League Cup final loss to Ross County.

Fontaine netted Hibs’ equaliser in the 2-1 defeat, thrashing a low drive from 10 yards into the corner of the net just before half-time. However, he blotted his copybook in the 90th minute when his attempted clearance of a Michael Gardyne cross landed at the feet of Alex Schalk. The Dutch striker, a yard from goal, couldn’t miss.

Though he spoke to the media after the game, Fontaine felt there were still some things that needed to be said, and he took to Twitter to post a heartfelt message to the Hibs fans, whom he thanked for supporting him despite the error.

The tweet read: “Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest moments and one of the lowest moments in my life... The emotion I felt during both will stay with me forever.

“To play and score for a club you love in a cup final is what dreams are made of and no one can take that away from me.

“I made a mistake at the wrong time and ultimately killed mine and my teammates dream of lifting the cup on the day, for a club I love playing for.

“But I can walk away from that game knowing I gave everything to try and win down to the last minute, and for that reason I will keep my head up high.

“Nobody is as gutted as myself, but all I can do, as yoy have to in sport, is deal with it and move on quickly.

“Thank you for the support as always.”
