Lee Clark denies he's set to quit as Kilmarnock boss

Reports on Friday morning claimed the former Blackpool and Birmingham manager was ready to walk away from Rugby Park following the less than impressive start his side have made to the new campaign.

They looked sluggish after losing to Betfred Cup opponents Morton last Saturday and then had to fight back from two goals down to beat bottom tier outfit Berwick Rangers on Tuesday night as Killie’s hopes of qualifying from Group H came close to unravelling.

Clark reportedly criticised his players in the dressing room after that Shielfield Park display before giving them two days off while he considered his position.

But the Englishman insists he is going nowhere just yet.

He said: “I’ve not seen the story and I always say, actions speak louder than words. I’m still here and I’m honoured to be the manager here.

“I’ve had fantastic backing from the board of directors and the supporters. I’ve got a fantastic group of players, who are great characters, great lads. So the work goes on. Let’s do the job as normal.

“I’ve really grown to love the place. I enjoy coming in every day. I’ve no idea where these stories come from. It’s not for me to justify. I never wrote them.

“There’s no question about my loyalty. I’m desperate to be successful for the people of Kilmarnock.”

Clark brought 11 new players in over the summer - the oldest of whom is just 22.

But despite their lack of spark so far, Clark believes his side can reach the last 16 of the Betfred Cup and go on to avoid the relegation scraps which the club have been involved in during recent seasons.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s visit of Albion Rovers, he said: “Hopefully we can get the win which should see us through as one of the best runners-up or if even if there’s a shock in the Morton-Berwick game, we can go through as group winners.

“Confidence isn’t an issue. If I include the friendly games we’ve played, we’ve won five out of six. If we start the season like that we’ll be more than happy.

“I certainly think this group of players will get us to an improved level on last season. It’s a big ask to get into the top half but with a little luck and a good start I think we can achieve that. I’ve still got total belief in what the players are doing.”
