League Two wrap: East Fife take over leadership

East Fife defeated Stirling Albion 1-0 at blustery Bayview to record a sixth win in a seven-game unbeaten run and reclaim top spot in the process. Forthbank goalkeeper'¨Chris Smith set the tone for an impressive display early on when he kept out an effort by Jamie Insalland it looked like he was going to deny the hosts with a string of impressive saves, but he was finally beaten 18 minutes from time. Manager Gary Naysmith said: “The players are delighted with the three points and being at the top of the table. It has been a frustrating time for Kevin after an injury, but he took his goal well.”

Stirling manager Stuart McLaren said: “It was not a pretty game and it had the look of a first goal is the winner meeting throughout. Unfortunately, we never got it.”

Elgin, who had led the table, went down 3-1 at Montrose.

Chris Templeman netted from 18 yards three minutes from half-time, then set up Gary Fraser to double the lead on 55 minutes. Adrian Mallagaray prodded in the third with an hour gone.

A headed own goal by Neil Martyniuk in injury time gave Elgin some consolation.

Queen’s Park returned to the top four with a 1-0 win at Arbroath. John Carter scored after five minutes, the hosts suffering further blows when Craig Watson was stretchered off and Jamie Henry was dismissed for a second booking.

Clyde defeated Berwick 2-1, through Scott Linton’s penalty a header by debutant John Gemmell. Ewan McNeil replied for the visitors.

Bottom side East Stirlingshire lost 1-0 to visitors Annan Athletic, Josh Todd scoring the winner.
